It’s a time old battle between aesthetic and functionality, and the importance of balance. What functions doesn’t always look great and what looks great doesn’t always function as it needs to. So which is more important?
The answer is, well, they’re just as important as each other!
Not the answer you wanted really is it?
But it is true. It’s a battle we have fought in house a lot! In this day and age we face an influx of gorgeous images and aesthetic on a daily basis, so your aesthetic game HAS to be high because, despite what we all learned in school ‘not to judge a book by its cover’, that is exactly what happens. ESPECIALLY when it comes to putting a high ticket product into the mix. We need to know who we are buying from, where our money is going and trust that we are making a sound investment. So the best thing you can do is to ensure your aesthetic is:
- Clean & clear (no, not like the face wash)
- Making sure that lines are clean, text is justified to the same points going up the page.
- Colour palette is kept between 3-5 colours that compliment each other and can be used across your whole site in different combinations.
- Images are high quality and self explanatory, demonstrating your point accurately.
The Importance of Balance
However, there is also no use having all of this with a back end that doesn’t function. The skeleton and the muscles of your site is essentially what runs your system and drives traffic to your site. Having a pretty skin doesn’t GET people to your site, it just keeps them there a little longer, wanting to look around.
Often, as people, we will have a stronger skillset in either the practical side or the creative side. So we would suggest, if you are just starting up on your own and you don’t have the support of a team to outsource it. Because you are the most valuable in your lifestyle business within your zone of genius. It doesn’t mean you have failed if you can’t do it all yourself. Think about all the time you can spend of the aspect that lights you up by outsourcing the rest to someone else who can support you with their zone of genius!
We can all be guilty of trying to be everything for everyone especially as entrepreneurs, so why not focus on your zone, and co-create your site so you get that beautiful balance between aesthetic AND functionality?!
