What is gratitude?
Now, I know that its somewhat of a buzzword at the moment in certain circles, but it’s something that it took me a while to get my head, and heart around.
More so my heart.
Because we see the #grateful pop up a lot on platforms such as Instagram, often paired with an image perhaps on a yacht, or beach club, or private jet, and the more I would see it, the more I would question its validity. Are people just saying it for sayings sake?
“Well yes it’s easy to be grateful when you have such an amazing life, how could you not be.”
How Gratitude Changes Everything
At this time, I remember looking at my life, which, by all accounts and definitely on Instagram, was a life to be grateful for.
Travelling the world, going to incredible parties, surrounded my wonderful friends, and on the surface I was grateful, but in my heart I wasn’t.
In my heart, there was something missing. Because I wasn’t practising gratitude.
I was being swept up in the whirlwind on surface level, having an amazing time, yes.
But what is it to be grateful, truly grateful?
You have to switch your mindset.
Now, I’ve been incredibly lucky in that my work has facilitated travel to all these incredible places and wonderful experiences, so please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that I am NOT grateful, I’m just saying that at the time, I wasn’t being actively grateful.
I wasn’t practising ‘gratitude’. It wasn’t until I did that I realised how gratitude changes everything.
I can look back now, with a new mindset and be grateful for these times, because of what I have learnt.
Learning To Notice The Small Things
I now know that gratitude isn’t in the magnitude of how amazing your life is. Its appreciating the smallest things, and having multiple moments of gratitude in even the most mundane of days, where you are sat at your laptop, in bed, while it pours with rain outside, hammering away at emails, or sales calls.
Finding the gratitude in appreciating your cup of coffee that moral supports you through the first hour or so of your morning.
Appreciation for the rain, that it’s bringing life to the plants, and providing water for the animals to drink.
Appreciation for the warm, cosy environment that you are able to work. That you are able to work from your bed, and therefore anywhere that may take your fancy.
Appreciation for those tiny, minuscule things that we all too often overlook.
Acknowledging the small things highlights just how gratitude changes everything.
We compare our lives to the ones we see on social media and it becomes toxic, because nothing is ever ‘enough’.
But if you can find the joy in even the smallest things, if you can find gratitude in your daily life. This is where things REALLY change, they shift and get even more exciting.
Because you are not living in the future, or the past, or even in someone else’s life.
You are living in the present.
You are living in YOUR life.
This gives you power.
Power to change, power to grow, power to open your eyes to every opportunity that comes your way and APPRECIATE every opportunity that comes your way.
Even if it’s not for you, keeping your heart grateful and your eyes open, maybe the next opportunity will be yours.
Maybe, you create your own.
Because you see the daily beauty that surrounds you and you want more.
You are thirsty for more, and this drives you.
Not from a place of “keeping up with the Jones’” but from an authentic place of love and gratitude for YOUR life and giving YOU the power to make it whatever you want it to be.
