Want to Become a Digital Nomad?
Wanting to become a digital nomad has become a lot more well known in recent years. You see a lot more of us flying around social media, working online than ever before. Over the years I have met hundreds, if not thousands, of people and at some point I generally ask them one of two questions:
- What would you do if you won the lottery? or
- What’s on your bucket list?
Almost EVERYONE replies with TRAVEL MORE!!
I have come to the conclusion that the desire to travel and to experience new cultures is almost universal. So, why don’t we all do it?
Well, unfortunately society has taught us that we need to get a full-time job, work Monday to Friday and be happy with 20 days holiday a year. That doesn’t leave a lot of time to travel the world! Neither does it even begin to consider the financial implications of regular salaries versus regular life in today’s climate. This is where the term ‘digital nomad’ emerged.
If you won the lottery, the first thing most people would do is quit the job and travel anywhere in the world. Great idea, I think we all would really! The problem is, unless those lottery winners are financially savvy and are making their money work for them while they fulfill their dreams of an epic adventure, sooner or later that money may run out.
And then what? Back to the regular life with a job, surely torture after experiencing such freedom? This is where becoming a digital nomad and adopting the digital nomad lifestyle of working remotely comes in.
So, what about the Bucket List scenario? Well the problem is, by definition, once you’ve completed your bucket list, you’re supposed to die. Without being too morbid, what if you wait your entire life to complete your Bucket List, and then don’t make it that far? Or perhaps you stay alive but have to keep working because the pension hasn’t performed?
There are so many variables that could prevent you experiencing those longed for experiences, therefore is it worth waiting?
So I repeat my question, do you want to become a digital nomad?
Although neither of these approaches seemed sensible to me, with four adventurous children I wanted to be able to help them fulfill their (and my) dreams without having to wait for a 1 in a 14 million chance, or for near death. Time is too precious.
Being a marketing expert in the old world, meant that I was quickly able to see the potential of marketing in the new, digital world. The world is changing rapidly, and the future for the enlightened will consist of location independent careers that satisfy even the most dedicated digital nomad!
